Beyond Business Cards: Creating Lasting Professional Relationships

Networking: Where Does It Begin?

The power of networking lies in figuring out how to approach with the intent of forming genuine connections.

I've previously discussed the importance of first impressions, and it certainly applies here—actually, in any situation. Approaching someone, even with the best intentions, is not always easy. Picture this: you're at an event, standing in a corner, taking in the room. You become mindful of the person you're looking to meet—their walk, the way they speak, their mannerisms, body language, and their level of confidence (or lack thereof). You observe their attire, who they speak to, and who approaches them. Honestly, there's also an element of "attractiveness" that draws you to want to know that person better.

In the U.S., we often rely heavily on who you know, not just what you know. In certain cultures, what you know is the power of influence that leads to forming specific circles. This is the beginning of networking. You look for qualities in each other that can enrich your circle, initiating the cycle of networking.

  1. Attend Networking Events: One of the most effective ways to network is by attending events in your industry. Look for events where you can meet and connect with other professionals in your field. Be sure to bring your business cards, and don't be afraid to introduce yourself and start a conversation.

  2. Join Professional Groups: Joining a professional group in your industry is another great way to network. You can attend meetings, participate in online forums, and even volunteer for committees or events. This is a great way to build relationships with other professionals and stay up to date on the latest trends and news in your industry.

  3. Use Social Media: Social media is a powerful tool for networking. LinkedIn is a great platform to connect with other professionals in your field. You can also use Twitter to follow industry leaders and engage in conversations with them. Just remember to keep your social media profiles professional and up to date.

  4. Attend Conferences: Conferences are another great opportunity to network with other professionals in your industry. Attend sessions, participate in workshops, and be sure to attend any networking events or happy hours. This is a great way to meet new people and learn from others in your field.

  5. Volunteer: Volunteering for a cause or organization you are passionate about can also be a great way to network. You'll meet other like-minded individuals who share your interests, and you'll have the opportunity to make a difference while building relationships with others.

Fueling your network is what helps you grow. It's how your personal brand grows. And eventually, how your business grows. Keep the above tips in mind and watch the success unfold.
